Screen real estate on new Google+ profiles

Something's wrong with this image... I feel like Google+ took away my precious pixels and is now using them for making it look prettier.

What happened to you, Google? I thought you were the good guy who always cares about +Web Accessibility and putting focus on the content rather than on design…
